Announcing New Executive Dean for School of Arts & Sciences

Dr. George Harne, Ph.DThe University of St. Thomas is pleased to welcome its new executive dean for the School of Arts and Sciences, Dr. George Harne, Ph.D.

Harne was recruited by UST’s VP for Academic Affairs, Christopher Evans, who said, “Dr. Harne brings a national reputation and strategic vision to the University’s largest and most diverse school.”

Harne is a scholar who holds a doctorate in musicology from Princeton University. His distinguished career in higher education encompasses his service as a college president, music professor and over a decade of teaching the Humanities.

Since 2011, Dr. Harne has served as president at Magdalen College of the Liberal Arts. There he further developed the curriculum and integrated humanities program, recruited nationally recognized faculty, secured accreditation with the New England Commission of Higher Education, and extended the college’s national reputation.

Prior to that role, Harne was appointed academic dean at the college and was responsible for the development of a new honors program.

His UST appointment reaffirms the University’s commitment to a strong Catholic liberal arts core, which seeks to form the whole person as students become highly desirable to real-world employers.

Harne said, “My wife and I are delighted about the opportunity to serve the University, her students and her faculty. I look forward to joining the community and bringing my deep love for the liberal arts and the Catholic intellectual and spiritual traditions to UST.”

Harne went on to say that UST is poised at this extraordinary moment for growth here and nationally.

While division deans for the School of Arts & Sciences focus on curriculum and day-to-day tactical issues, Harne will devote his time to leadership, oversight and community outreach.
