BOLD - Living a Life of Service w/ Alex Yemeck

Alex Yemeck, host of BOLDThis is the tenth installment of BOLD - A University of St. Thomas Podcast, a series that creates a dialogue and aims to inspire, encourage and aid students—current and prospective— to “Be Your Bold Self.” New episodes are published bi-weekly. If you have an idea for a potential podcast guest or topic, send them to Darnell Miller at dmiller@stthom.edu.

This episode of BOLD is a little different, instead of Alex Yemeck interviewing members of the UST community, Darnell Miller, Producer, turns the tables on Alex and sits down with the host to learn about him. Yemeck shares insights about moving from Cameroon to America, setting up a non-profit and some of the challenges of returning to school. He also shares the origin story of BOLD.

Yemeck Offered three points of advice to help students create a mindset to make the most of college:

  1. Be aware of everything that is going on around you.
Be aware of what is going on in the country, be aware of what your parents believe in and be aware of their struggles and challenges. When you are aware of these things it will prepare your mind for college and you will know why you are going.
  2. Try to understand what it is you want to do.
Most students don’t know what they want to be when they grow up so use the information around you to help direct your education. Ask yourself what it is you like to do and what you are good at. Make sure you are not pursuing a career solely for the money.
  3. When in college make sure you learn about all of the resources available to you.
There are a lot of things that can help you in figuring out what you want to be and how to succeed in college.
