Celts for Life: Activism, Education and Scholarships

Celt for Life group 2020

“Celts for Life has been a defining part of my college experience,” Michaella Maniscalo, president of CFL said.

Through Celts for Life, students learn about pro-life matters, how to practically engage in pro-life dialogue with others and how to seek out opportunities to help others.

March for Life Rally is Virtual this Year

Celts for Life participates annually in the March for Life Rally in Washington, D.C. Upholding the dignity of life for all human beings, from conception to natural death, is the foundation of the Church’s social teaching, and advocating for the legal protection of unborn children is essential to this task.

While the pandemic prevents UST from participating in the March in person this year, Campus Ministry and Celts for Life are excited to invite you to experience the March for Life Rally virtually on Jan. 29.

March for Life Rally, Friday, January 29, 12 p.m. EST/11 a.m. CDT. Register here!

Cardinal O’Connor Conference on Life is Online this Year

Additionally, Georgetown University hosts an excellent pro-life conference annually and is a favorite part of Celts for Life's trip to DC. The Cardinal O’Connor Conference on Life has moved to an online format for this year so that anyone can attend (for free!). This conference will inspire, educate and equip students with essential knowledge from amazing pro-life presenters. The keynote speaker is Aimee Murphy from Rehumanize International, and we are especially excited to see that Dr. Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., is a panelist.

Cardinal O'Connor Conference on Life - Saturday, January 30, 10a.m.-4p.m. EST. Recorded talks are available if you cannot attend live. You can also view the schedule and zoom in for part of the conference if you can't make it the whole day. Celts for Life members are already registered and are pumped! The conference will start emailing recorded talks this week so register now!

Celts for Life Educational Speakers

CFL holds their meetings every other week with great guest speakers. This semester, CFL meetings will cover topics like the legal history of abortion, how to be pro-life online, the philosophy and biology of abortion and pro-life compassionate communication skills.

“Along with social activism, another part of the CFL mission is to educate on prolife topics and cultivate a prolife culture at our University, and we do so through these educational events, albeit via Zoom,” Sr. Nguyen said.

CFL will host a talk with Katherine Pitcher, the legal associate from Texas Right to Life, at the next club meeting on Feb. 3. The topic: the legal aspects of abortion and the history of Roe v. Wade.

Pregnant and Parenting Student Scholarship

Celts for Life also schedules prayer outside of Planned Parenthood once a month,” Maniscalo said. “My favorite initiative that Celts for Life leads is our Pregnant and Parenting Student Scholarship. The scholarship is a practical way for us to help support our fellow students who chose life for their children. No one should be forced to choose between their education and child, and I love that we are able to help lighten the financial load a little for these students. This spring will be the third year that we have awarded the scholarship and we have interviews for the scholarship scheduled for February 6th. In the first two years of the scholarship, we awarded $11,000 to students who chose life for their children,” she said.
