New Minor in Pre-Law at UST Starts Your Law Career

Students considering law school, curious about public law, or interested in the American Constitution have yet another reason to choose the University of St. Thomas-Houston. UST will launch its new minor in Pre-Law in the fall.

Importance of the New Minor

Associate Professor and Pre-Law Advisor Dr. Rick Young explains why the new minor matters.

“Before the Pre-Law Minor, the Pre-Law Program was an area of concentration only,” Young said. “The minor provides a more stable intellectual platform and gives the students who graduate a more definitive declaration that they are interested in law and committed to completing a program in law.”

UST’s Pre-Law Minor will prepare students for success in law school with a strong ethical foundation, keen analytical and critical thinking skills, and a solid command of English.

The new degree covers courses in History of the Common Law; Comparative Legal Systems; Introduction to American Jurisprudence; Constitutional Law; and Mock Trial.

The American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) selected UST to host one of the nation’s 15 regional AMTA tournaments (February 2023). Only two Texas universities were chosen to host the prestigious events — UST and Baylor.

“I believe our curriculum-based Pre-Law Program that teaches the normative antecedents to the American legal system is the best Pre-Law Program offered by any university in the country,” asserted Young.

Legal experts contributing to the new program include Dr. Young, Graham Taylor, Esq., and Brian Jordan, Esq.
