UST mourns the passing of Elizabeth 'Liz' Lyons Ghrist
It is with a heavy heart that we inform our community of the passing of Mrs. Elizabeth "Liz" Lyons Ghrist. Liz was a dear friend to our community and member of UST’s Board of Directors from 1995 – 2001. A former Harris County Commissioner, Liz was a pioneer in the areas of politics, community service, and business. She successfully chaired the University’s Shining Star Campaign, which launched in 2001 and raised $65 million for capital projects such as the Campus Life Mall, Malloy Hall, the current Guinan Hall, and the Moran Center Parking Garage. Liz gave endlessly of her time to support the University's priorities through continuing service on our advisory boards, committees, and was an honoree alongside Judge Carolyn Dineen King at our most recent Mardi Gras Scholarship Gala in 2023. In celebration of her service to the community, Liz was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Saint Thomas in 2003. Liz has left an indelible mark on our community and will be deeply missed. Funeral arrangements are pending and will be communicated as they are finalized.
